GMM 2020 Information

Please click the button below to access the pre-registration form for the 2020 Newark Natural Foods Co-op General Membership Meeting. All registered members will be entered into a raffle to win one of the gift baskets and other prizes, but you have to be present at the ZOOM meeting to win!

 

In lieu of the traditional meal served at the GMM, a $10 gift card will be issued to all attendees to help provide a delicious option at home. In-store pre-registration is also available at the Customer Service Desk.

All Co-op members are encouraged to attend and be involved in the future of the Co-Op. Come out to hear statements from this year's Board Candidates and cast your vote.  Candidate letters are posted below.  Members unable to attend are able to cast an absentee ballot at the Customer Service Desk beginning in November. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Board Secretary has received two letters of intent to run for Steward this year. Stewards Rachel Brewer and Fanilda Shaw are now on the ballot to renew their terms. Any member who is interested may be nominated from the "virtual" floor on Saturday, November 14th! 

No Bylaw Amendment proposals were submitted.

Update: member Sarah Grantham has submitted her letter of intention to run for the Board of Stewards. Her letter was too late to be included on the ballot (per the Bylaws) but we are very happy to note that she will be nominated from the virtual meeting floor!

To the Board of Stewards:

I am submitting my letter of intent to serve on the Board of Stewards of Newark Natural Foods Co-Op.  I have been shopping at the store since we moved to Newark a few years ago, and I love all of the options that are provided for people with all kinds of dietary restrictions, as well as sourcing locally when possible.  My favourite part of the store is the bulk section, as I am trying to reduce my plastic waste and lessen my footprint.  I also love being able to come to the farmers market and support local vendors. 

I have served on the boards of nonprofit organizations, and am excited to branch out into corporate governance and to support the Co-Op and our community.  I believe my experience as a CPA will provide value to the board, as I have already demonstrated while assisting with COVID-19 relief funding.

Rachel Brewer:

I am entering my name as candidate for re-election to the Board of Stewards at the 2020 GMM. 

 

Members know me as a dirt-loving, community-minded, outside-of-the-box thinker who is proud to say that influences from the Newark Natural Foods Co-op have organically contributed to my personal growth and as a farmer and vendor at our Farmers Market. 

 

I have grown to love fellow members as part of my own family and always look forward to hearing from members on how best I can serve the Co-op. 

Fanilda Shaw:

I am writing to express my interest in serving on the Board of Stewards during the 2020-2021 period.  I am confident that my extensive experience in management and administration of community initiatives in the non-profit sector and my passion and commitment to help people to improve their quality of life makes me uniquely qualified to contribute to advance the mission of your organization.

I am a proactive and creative professional with 20 years of experience in community initiatives and organizational development strategies that have resulted in positive outcomes for underserved communities in Delaware as well as in the Dominican Republic where I started my career. I have led multiple programs with a high level of difficulty, many of which focused on healthy eating, including education and access to healthy foods.

My education includes a Master in Agribusiness and Marketing, a B.S in Community Development, a certificate in adult education and multiple leadership, strategic planning, equity, organizational development and continuous improvement courses.

In addition to my experience and education, I will bring to the table my multi-cultural perspective, which is critical to embrace and leverage the richness that comes from different thinking and cultures. I am particularly interested in looking at the power of healthy food to create physical wellness and how food can connect us like no other thing on this earth. The Co-op is doing a great job with some of their programs, for example the $5 Community Dinners. I would love to explore other ideas that help to create connections through healthy foods. 

When I think about how fast the world is moving, rather than see challenges, I see opportunities. I believe that being part of the food industry is an excellent place to be; people will always need food; therefore, the demand will always be there.  For the Food Co-op is particularly important the constant increase in the demand for healthy foods.  A big problem that I observe as a consumer is the amount of information out there, people are getting confuse, I believe that we need to focus on helping people to make the right choices for them.  Another area that I would love to get engaged is in the use of online marketing as an essential tool to reach the new generations. I am currently taking classes to be proficient on how to sale using the internet.

In addition to leaning news ways of reaching people I am currently exploring new ventures. Last year I quit my job of 14 years to start my own business.  Best thing ever! A lot of work, but I love it… My previous job helped me to develop big wins but put me in a small cage. My business is allowing me to fly high, where there are no limits. So yes, if you allow me to be part of the Board I will also bring my entrepreneurial spirit in everything that I do.

Lastly, I would like to share my most significant asset, a quality that I did not learn in school, university, or previous jobs. A trait that I learn from my mother, which is my positive attitude that drives everything I do in life. I live the saying, "If there is a will, there is a way."  I do not get overwhelmed by challenges; in fact, they fuel my creativity

Sunday 9 AM - 7 PM (cafe closes at 7 PM)

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the first two hours

(8 AM to 10 AM) will be reserved for shoppers who are at a higher risk of severe illness including older adults and those who have compromised immune systems.
